RE: Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare Staffing
Dear Ms. Stromstad:
By way of introduction, my name is Debbie Hayes and I am the Upstate New York, Connecticut, New England Area Director for the Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO. Over the years I have had the pleasure of working with both St. Luke’s Hospital and Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare in representing our members at CWA Local 1126.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has wreaked havoc on hospitals across New York State and I know that FSLH is no exception. All those who work in health care today, are facing unprecedented challenges financial included. I have to say however that no one group of people is being challenged more than those that provide direct patient care to the COVID-19 patients.
I am hearing reports from employees of FSLH related to horrendous staffing levels throughout the hospital and in every job title. For example, on AC3 staffing levels are one nurse for every six to seven patients. Given the acuity of the patients, the requirement to wear Personal Protective Equipment for hours on end and the emotional toll of caring for these patients, a staffing ratio of five, six or seven patients for one nurse is just too much.
I would like to request a meeting with you to discuss staffing at FSLH at your earliest convenience. I would be happy to make the drive to Utica for the opportunity to meet with you at a socially distanced meeting or we could do a Zoom call.
Thank you in advance Darlene for your consideration in this matter.
